The term compassion fatigue was coined in 1992 to describe the level of burnout experienced by caregivers and physicians who were worn down by caring for patients in post-traumatic stress disorder clinics and emergency rooms.
This phenomenon has been known by other names including secondary traumatic stress, secondary victimization, and secondary survivor.
