“Spastic Colon” is another name for Irritable Bowel Syndrome or “IBS”
Spastic colon is when you have gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation with a negative medical workup. When doctors do not know what is causing your symptoms, we give you the label of “spastic colon,” instead of more effectively searching for the source of your symptoms.
The most effective way to eliminate spastic colon is to treat the underlying causes. Read more…
Other name for the condition: Leaky Gut Syndrome
Probiotics
One thing that has been helpful for the G.I. problems of most of my patients and family members are Probiotics, which essentially are our “friendly bacteria” that tends to get decimated by the antibiotics we take intentionally not (given that most milk and animal products are treated with antibiotics to prevent spoiling or infections of the farm animals respectively ). Moreover, it was recently reported that even the so called purified water we drink show traces of medications like antibiotics, chemotherapy agents, hormones among other substances that could not remove by regular purification methods.) The water tend to get those contaminants through the sewage system. But even the preservative or artificial products we ingest tend to poison or kill our “friendly bacteria” or that they cannot live on the highly processed foods we eat. After trying several brands most of my patients and our entire family settled for the Renew Life Brand: Ultimate Flora.

One of those dietary methods that can help restore balance in the bowel is the intake of acidophilus—that is, milk bacteria, a healthy type of bacteria. Acidophilus is found in yogurt with live and active yogurt cultures. Indeed, eating one cup of yogurt a day can markedly diminish the frequency of recurrent vaginal yeast infections. Acidophilus is also available in supplement form, but which brand you use is important. Many brands do not actually contain the amount that the label claims or contain dead bacteria—which do not put up much of a fight against the yeast. I like to use Probiotic Pearls by Integrative Therapeutics or Acidophilus Pearls by Enzymatic Therapy. The pearl coating acts like a little tank—which protects the milk bacteria as they pass through the acidic environment of the stomach. Without this coating to protect against stomach acid, it is estimated that 99.9% of these yeast fighting bacteria will NOT survive the trip through the stomach. This means that to get the number of healthy bacteria in 1 pearl to your colon, you’d need to eat around 3 gallons of yogurt! Once the pearl hits the alkaline environment of the small intestine, it dissolves and releases the bacteria to fight the yeast. I recommend that you take 2 pearls twice a day for 5 months, after which time many people choose to continue taking one a day for prevention. Although the box claims 1 billion bacteria per pearl, the laboratory assays actually show that these pearls contain 2.4 billion bacteria. If you are on antibiotics (not antifungals), take acidophilus at least three to six hours before or after the antibiotic dose.

With a great deal of skeptisizm, I read this book over five years ago. Ulcerative colitis was bleeding me to death, not that I had a life much worth living at the time. My world revolved around pain and I could be no further than 30 seconds from a bathroom. Ms. Gottschall, her book, and the diet completely vanquished all my symptoms of UC, saved my life and restored my intestinal health.

I have been on this regimen for three years. During this time I have been drug and symptom free. A year and half ago I posted the following review, which is even more dramatic proof now: After a year and a half on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, I finally followed my gastroenterologist’s request to get a colonoscopy. After all, it had been over four years since the last time anyone had given me any sort of exam of the gut, and 18 years with Crohns. My doc said “We got all the way to the cecum. No evidence at all of Crohns. No scars. No inflammation. Nothing. You look completely normal.” Read more…
My husband was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of colitis then Crohn’s disease. All that his doctors were doing were prescribing higher and higher doses of drugs (sulfasalazine, prednisone, etc) which were making him sick and caused him to drop pounds daily. Then we heard about Elaine Gottschall’s book. It has literally been a life saver!!! The author provides both an explanation for the diet and a simple guide of “do eat” and “don’t eat” foods in list form. My husband felt like he had his symptoms under control within two days! He was able to stop taking his medications with no complications. At last, no more stomachaches. After two years of being on this diet, my husband has shown remarkable improvement after follow up tests. However, don’t expect your doctors to support this diet, they don’t want to give up their hold on prescribing expensive prescription drugs! Even more unbelievable, the specialists we’ve seen are completely ignorant of this book! Incredible. This diet is completely natural and relatively easy to follow, especially considering the alternatives! Buy this book for yourself or for your loved one who suffers from this disease. It can change lives. We cannot thank Elaine Gottschall enough.
